How long should it take to receive the results for pre-employment drug test and background check?

I was offered a job from Blue Cross Blue Shield on Monday (Jan. 26). I was informed I had to take a drug test and they would do a background/criminal check. I was curious how long this should take and was wondering why they would offer me a job before doing the background check and drug screen.

I am an office manager and do these all the time. however it may vary by company. Our drug tests take 2 days for results. For background checks they can take anywhere from 3 - 10 days depending on how long the state takes to get the criminal background back. It usually varies from state to state.

Two or three days... maybe a week. It's very common to offer a job conditional on a satisfactory drug screen and background check.

depending on te company it could take 1-2 weeks they will inform you of their findings one way or the other. some companies offer the jobs before the background check or drug evaluations are completed this is a conditional job offer.
