What is the job availability for english teachers?

i am studying english and secondary education and i was wondering what the job availability is for high school english teachers... i just read in the chicago tribune that there is a surplus of teachers in the field and the amount that are hired is less than 20% (for english). then again, lots of teachers are supposed to be retiring in the near future. does anyone know more about this?

I teach HS English in the Chicago area but I applied to almost 20 schools and only had one interview. Thankfully that is the job I got. I have read that there are teaching jobs down south.
