What is the proper phone etiquette when talking to a potential employer?

Hi, I recently turned in a job application at a retail store. I was then advised to call the HR manager within the next couple of days. I was planning to call today, but I am very nervous. What exactly should I say to the manager? Is there any sort of etiquette I should be following? Please help!

Just be polite. Since it is a retail position sounding bright and personable is important. You probably have an interview scheduled if HR is calling you. Tell the manager who you are, and then ask if he's had a chance to review your employment application yet. That way you are recognizing the fact that he's a busy and important man (which he probably isnt but it doesnt hurt to stroke his ego a little).
