Science Foundation Ireland :poor value for money or an elite club syphoning off scarce resources?

Yesterdays Irish Independent Thursday March 26 2009 CUTS in research funding would be damaging for the economy, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) warned yesterday. SFI director general Prof Frank Gannon said that cutting funding would have a 'ripple effect' which could affect the IDA's work in attracting investment in jobs. More than 40pc of the Foreign Direct Investment projects won by the IDA last year were for research and development initiatives. "It is essential we prepare for the new global environment that will exist after this recession," Prof Gannon said. "Ireland will have to be able to win exports by being the location from where new, essential and complex products originate," he added. ************************************************************************ The Question: public outrage is justifiably direced against high paid bankers who have led their business into collapse and there is disquite about the blank cheque Cowan keeps writing them, But what about the blank cheque written to SFI and the Irish universities to attract industry to Ireland. Is it value for money ? are jobs really create or is SFI just a vehicle for top scientists to be paid mega salaries. Example: From Sunday Independent and Primetime Associated Professor of Genetics (Smurfitt InstituteTCD) 138,000 collage salary, unvouched college expenses 38,000 SFI salary ??????? and xpense ???? Research area : bioinformatics How many jobs in Ireland did his research create in 2008 and what was the cost to the taxpayer per job Example 2 : Neuroscience PI TCD, Super salaried as collegue above Lecturer in Genetics and Neuroscience TCD ( ? Two salaries) How many jobs did TCD's andSFI's investment in his research directly create ?
