What are the advantages of media putting such an emphasis on body image?

I have to do some debate. And I have to somehow make my audience believe that media is doing a good thing by putting such an emphasis on body image in our culture. Any ideas, or am i going to lose this debate? I had no idea where to put this question, if you think theres a better place let me know!

The advantage is that it reflects the true superficial reality of society. Why deal in bullshit, or 'ethics' or 'what things should be like'? Tell it like it is; and media does just that. Media gives us exactly what we want; it's one of the few aspects of society that is almost 100% perfectly satisfying.

I can't think of any except that companies make money off of selling stuff that is somehow supposed to make TV viewers look like the images. So I guess profit is an advantage, at least to the makeup companies, treadclimber, all of that.

That the media put some kind of "emphasis" on body image is a myth. Anorexia only exists in America because obesity is prevalent almost exclusively in America. Go outside America, and you will not see anorexia OR obesity... More
