New York City subway system question?

You know when the train suddenly stops, and then they announce that train disputer or traffic is ahead? What is disputer/ traffic? What exactly is going on in front of me? I have always been wondering when they announce it.

Train movement is controlled by signals. A train will affect many signals behind it, generating a pattern of yellow and red signals. there is a train within the block of the signal...or more simply there is a red light in front of you because there is a train directly stopped infront of you.
