How hard is it to learn and communicate in Chinese?

Are there are ways to get a head start on learning Chinese before traveling to the country? I understand they teach in Chinese in universities in China and my husband would have to study Chinese for 1 full year before being allowed to begin his Doctorate coursework.

No head start. What your husband learn in you home country will only come to life when you reach China. You cannot master a language well without really immersed into it.
