why are people 'shocked' that in our society today animal cruelty exists?

let me explain. it is 2009 we treat animals with more kindness, respect and love than at any time in history, animal charities regularly receive more money than any others which is IMO a bit strange but a matter of personal choice. so why are people 'shocked' so much at stories of neglect? yes they are truly horrible and those responsible should be prosecuted and banned from keeping animals ever again BUT, get real for gods sake! look at the recent history of the world, also you have to take into account that a city persons ideal regarding animals is massively different to the rural reality heres a few examples of what a lot of people would call cruel but country people would call practical. your farm has way too many cockrells, all they do is fight,f**k and feed, they produce nothing in return (way too skinny to eat) so a farmer will shoot all but a couple of them, this gives the hens a rest from being raped all the time and also means the remaining cocks don't tear each other to shreads (FYI i have watched this being done) Ditto cats, i have been to farms that are horribly overrun by cats, the kittens have flu (meaning their eyes are rotted out) the females are constantly pregnant and the males just fight all day. what to do? if a farmer is rich they could newt all the females and this would help a great deal but the reality is many farmers are living on loans and have no spare cash plus the life expectancy of the average half feral farm cat is about two years ,excluding kitten mortality. now i don't know the answer to this but i do know that in my grandfathers day people used to sell cat pelts (my grandad is 84 BTW) so presumably there was some sort of cull. pets are pets and are rightly pampered but the same does not apply to the other 90% of them, cats can be vermin if left to their own devices and this drastically effects their health (see Greece,Turkey,Cypress and rural UK) what i am trying to say is that the over sentimentalised opinions that are very loudly shouted on here are one sided, they slam all other opinions and use language and tones that are very similar to bullying. don't even get me started on the pedigree nazis and their stupid posts. yes some of you here will notice my baiting questions and doubt my above statement but excuse me for having a sense of humour, it does get somewhat riled by ignorance maskerading as righteousness. cyclops has a good example, some of those who shout so loudly about how wrong animal cruelty is quite happily buy their cloths from sweatshop exploiters, heir food from farms that all but enslave their workers and their petrol from multinationals that destabilise entire countries for profit....but thats ok so long as the fwuffy animals are looked after.

Ok, this question was way too long to read all of it, but to answers the question: I believe that animal cruelty is wrong, shocking and vile, as I am a great animal lover. I don't know why you bother asking a question like this. It's obvious what the majority of people would say. And the small minority who don't care... More
