why was the south so committed to the institution of slavery?Why did poor whites in the south support slavery? what obstacles lay in the way of the south getting rid of slavery?

The South depended on slavery in order to make huge profits from their plantations. Agriculture was the backbone of the Southern economy. Without slavery, the whole agrarian system would collapse.

They couldn't run a huge plantation by themselves. They would lose alot of money if it weren't for the slaves.
