Whats the position or job thats like a lawyer, but not a lawyer?

My old teacher told me his son was defended in court once by someone legal.. Meaning they know all about law but are technically not lawyers. They defend people in court but are not lawyers. Do you know the name or position of the people im talking about?

Technically paralegals are not allowed to appear before a court of law since that would be considered unauthorized practice of law.
