Pathology It kind of depends on which branch of pathology you want to go into, but that is the general term.

Pathology generally is a science of finding out what is causing morbidity or mortality. A "pathologist" is usually the MD who examines medical specimens for the purpose of diagnosing disease. The sub-field you seem to be talking about, specifically about finding causes of human death, is forensic pathology.
