What are some career alternatives to traditional 4-year colllege that still pay decent?

Hey are there any jobs or career paths that you can recommend that offer you a great chance to "move up the ladder" after getting an entry level position? I've heard so many stories about people getting 4 year degrees and then they cant even find a job in their field, so I'm talking about an entry level job at a place where maybe once you've been there awhile maybe they would send somewhere to get trained for an even higher position within the company or something? If you cant help me on that, what are some good trades, 2 year, "certification programs" , apprenticeships that can get me a good job?

Apprenticeship (2~4yrs) leading to journeyman papers is a good path to middle class stability. There are no guarantees, and even journeymen g******d off, but the alternative of no credentials, last hired first fired, is worse.
