Can a potential employer ask for a copy of my credit report?

yes, alot of employers are now looking at credit reports when they are doing background checks and can choose wheather or not to hire based on credit.

Depending on the laws where you are looking for work. Credit reporting and HIPPA laws dictate when information can be released. Read the application you sign. It may state something to the effect that " I authorize XYZ company or its agents or representative to obtain any and all Information about me that it may determine to be warranted in order toverifyy my suitability for employment with this company." It's all there in the small print... More

Yes they can ask for the credit copy with the fact that if they have you in charge of a company credit card or something like that, they want to see that you wouldn't use their card carelessly. This is one example. Other reasons may be if you're having to pay bills etc.

Yes, they can ask your permission for a background check and credit check. You can always refuse.... but that pretty much ends any chance of getting this job.
