I'm confused about corporate America. First of all, what the Hell is a "project"? Everything I read or hear?

that deals with work mentions this catchphrase. Call me crazy, but all my life I was raised to think that a job pays by the "hour", or by the "week", NOT by the "project". And the jobs that were at the forefront of the mainstream psyche were jobs that were simple and straight-forward, and that anyone could understand. "Policeman", "firefighter", "doctor", "lawyer"- these immediately come to mind. Also, what is the deal with this "annual" salary that these people make? Does that mean that the powers-that-be at the corporation give the employee a fixed amount of money for the entire year, and they get to use him/her for as much as they want, without regard to the number of hours worked, or whether or not the employee gets time off for vacation, etc? If this is the case it is a TERRIBLY raw deal. Oh, one more thing, why have these types of jobs become standard in our society? It seems that "work" is all of a sudden synonymous with "cubicle", "project", and "meeting" I've never once in my life had any of the above at my numerous jobs.
