Where is a good place for a teen to live in cali?

I currently live in Washington state. I'm 19 years old and strongly considering moving down to California. I know the economy is bad and it's going to be tough finding a job and affordable housing, but where is a good place to start living for a young adult? Living in one of the popular cities might be impossible, so I'll need to find a city that's atleast close to the action.
