What do you think about making plastic-bags cost money?

I had this thought two weeks ago, and I strongly believe a law should be passed that requires that people will be charged for each plastic bag they use. Even further, the optimist hiding inside of me wishes that at least some of this money will go towards cleaning the environment. How practical is that? I heard someone already brought it up--- does anyone know about this? How can this be made legal in the US? and in other countries? What do you think of this idea?

You may think all those little freebies like bags are free but actually the stores tack on a little more for your product to cover the cost of them . They don't get them for free and im sure there not in the biz to give out things free . A deposit would work a hell of allot better like pop and beer cans and bottles do... More

It's my understanding that putting a charge on plastic bags is to DISCOURAGE you from buying them and encourage you to invest in environmentally friendly, reusable bags that are available in most grocery stores for a couple bucks each. I think it's a great idea.

Actually, Ireland started charging a 33 cent tax on every plastic bag. Ireland does not use any plastic bags. It is NOT an abysmally bad idea. I think it's great. It makes people think about what they are doing. The way to make change is to make it cost... More

Plastic takes thousands of years to biodegrade and the environmental cost of producing them is not factored into the price of plastic, so it might just be a good idea to make people pay for plastic bags. Another scarce resource that needs to be conserved is water. It is a scarce resource and the more we conserve the... More

They are a waste when people use them they just throw them away and never recycle them. There are ways to enforce this message hold meetings attend or inform your community the... More
