Would you consider being a police officer a dangerous job?

I was just wondering, especially in a larger city. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico and would like to be a police officer here or in Santa Fe. Also would you say being an officer on a bicycle is more dangerous than one in a squad car? And do females have tougher times finding a job as a police officer in a larger city? Thank you!

I policed for five years in the southeast as a bicycle patrol officer, finishing in 2002. At that time (I don't know about now), six bicycle officers had died in the line of duty nationwide, three of those were before 1925 and one of the remaining was a deliberate murder. Compare that to motorcycle cops who were... More

Yes, the job has many hazards and officers are often seriously injured everyday. It will never make the news and you will never hear about it. I have been a police officer in an urban area for five years,in that time I have suffered injuries requiring surgery, been assaulted and shot at. As far as the female aspect... More

Depends, some jobs in small towns are not. Jails and rat holes on the street are death traps. Cops have 60% hire heart disease rates then average and are 2 times more likely to have PTSD than combat vets. Mogel vs Arizona forced states to recognize the job as traumatic.
