Are Mechanical Engineers or the profession itself becoming obsolete?

In developed countries, i'm talking about. I'm sure a mechanical engineer would find tons of work in China. But in the U.S., it seems like all M.E. jobs are actually project management jobs or electrical engineering jobs (work we're not trained to do, but are forced to do anyways). Maybe the only exception is the A and E firms that need licensed M.E.s for HVAC. But in corporate life, it seems like M.E.s are eithe not needed or forced to do work we're not trained to do.

i dont think so. You must have cad experience(like Solidworks) to design your parts. It seems like most of the ME jobs are oilfield related, like my current job. Hopefully, if we get renewable energy going, there will be more jobs for ME's.

Mechanical engineering isn't obsolete. Any company that manufactures machines needs mechanical engineers. I don't see machines disappearing any time soon.
