What is the difference between RN and LVN in the US, besides the pay?

LVNs are trained in skills to perform, like taking vital signs, performing basic patient cares and some skilled cares like wound care / dressing changes, giving meds (with exceptions like IV pushes, blood, TPN and lipids), etc... More

RNs go to school longer. There are some injections RNs can give that lpns cant. A RN can hang blood an lpn cant and RN's can give meds iv push and through a centeral line and a lpn cant. A lpn can not start a line on someone unless they are specially trained to do so.

LVN/LPN's cannot officailly assess pts. An RN must do the assessment (or sign off on the LPN's) Another big thing is job opportunities. It can be very hard for an LPN to get a job at a hospital and most LPN's end up at a nursing home, which I did, but it can get pretty old. I love the hospital. Better pay, better... More

It has to do with level of responsibility. Usually the LVN reports to the RN. The duties often differ related to assessment and what you are allowed to do. Pay is less for LVN for a reason.
