How much "sacking" did the "barbarians" actually do during the declining days of the Western Roman Empire?

Today we hear terrible things about i****************s, and no doubt a small minority of them are criminals, but the majority of them are here just to get a job. Likewise, I've read about the "barbarians" who were always "sacking" Rome during the declining days of the Western Roman Empire. How much sacking did they actually do, and how many of them were just there to look for a job? A third-generation freethinker

The first barbarians to sack Rome (in it's imperial history) were the Visigoths led by Alaric in 410 AD. Alaric was only looking for some land where his people could settle & tried to make a deal with the Emperor Honorius. Looking for a job? Never heard of ransacking a future employers office and then asking for a job. What qualifications would you list? Rome had several conscripted armies, they usually went to your door and asked if you wanted the job though, not the other way around.

The difference is that the barbarians used to come in the Roman Empire in large number, carried weapons with them and plundered and destroyed every city and village they met in their way - not to tell about the many killings. Happily, the present day immigrants are unarmed.
