How do you enjoy living in Boston?

My partner would like to relocate for a job at Harvard in Cambridge, but I would prefer to live in the city of Boston. I am used to living in a very laid-back city (Houston) which I very much enjoy. Where are the youthful and trendy areas to live? Is it affordable? How would you rate Boston in terms of diversity? Also, I am quite afraid of taking my brand new Mini Cooper to suffer through the winters up there. We lived in SoCal, where everyone has nice cars because of the nice weather. What is the deal with rusty cars up there?
