How can I transfer old vhs tapes onto DVD?

I just purchased a Panasonic DMR-EZ485V so that I could convert my old VHS tapes into DVDs. I'm running into a problem because all the VHS tapes I've tried so far say they are write-protected and won't let me copy them. Is there some way to bypass this?

You can transfer VHS to DVD with a video transfer service. For my homemovies I used StashSpace.Com, they did a great job and it was only $6.95 a tape for the transfer.
