How does someone become a director?

I know this might sound like a stupid question, but how do people become directors of major films? I dream of becoming a director/writer. I love (attempting) to write scripts and watching movies with the sound off to focus on the camera movements, but my question is how do the big Hollywood directors get funding from major film companies if they are a first time director. I'm guessing they go to film school or they make short films/commercials and if the companies like they're previous work the company will give them money to make the movie. How does the whole process work if you know. Thanks

Its very simple. Go to a college. Study filmmaking. Write a script. Show it to the professor. If he likes it he might give it to a production house. First be a script writer the knowing production houses you might get a chance becoming a director. First start small like making small documentaries, small skits anything.
