Can you still draw unemployment from a private job if you are turning in taxes?
My Mom just took a private job as a caregiver for some elderly folks. She will be turning in her own taxes. If she were to get fired would she be able to draw unemployment?

No, because she is a private contractor and doesn't contribute to the unemployment fund.

Generally, no. First, to collect unemployment, a person must first work as an employee. This job sounds like work as an independent contractor, not an employee. If she is an employee, the people she works for should be withholding taxes, paying into unemployment for her, paying matching ss and medicare amounts, and giving her a W-2 at the end of the year. She would be eligible for unemployment... More
