Migraines are chronic headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. Symptoms can be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.
Although there's no cure, medications can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. If treatment hasn't worked for you in the past, it's worth talking to your doctor about trying a different migraine medication. The right medicines combined with self-help remedies and lifestyle changes may make a tremendous difference.
1. For immediate migraine relief, retreat to a dark, dry place away from noise and try any of the more common treatments, such as over-the-counter pain medications, massage, heat application, and sleep. If you prefer not to take medication, your best bet is to massage the affected area, apply a heating pillow, and take a nap until the pain subsides.
2. In addition to temporary migraine relief, prevent future attacks by eliminating possible migraine triggers. Try to stay active with regular exercise and by changing positions as often as possible at home and on the job to avoid aggravating your trouble areas. Reduce stress by getting plenty of sleep and, if necessary, look into alternative relaxation methods, such as enrolling in a yoga class, practicing meditation, or making time for the activities you most enjoy. Determine which food triggers to avoid by keeping a diary of the foods you eat in relation to your migraine attacks. Always drink enough water to stay hydrated and avoid consuming products with caffeine, as dehydration and caffeine dependence can both cause migraines.
3. Research alternative migraine treatments and therapies. Chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture can all reduce stress and relax your body, while offering other health benefits. Although alternative treatments are often misunderstood, you may find that one or more of these options, combined with other methods, works best to relieve your migraines. For example, a lot of people don't know that migraines can be related to a neck or back issue and that, with regular chiropractic treatment, you may reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
4. Consider seeking medical attention for your migraines, especially if attacks are frequent, severe, and are accompanied by serious symptoms, such as dizziness or blurred vision. Your primary care physician can recommend tests and treatments and may refer you to a specialist, such as an eye doctor, dental professional, chiropractor, or neurologist, who may be able to determine the source of your attacks and prescribe the best treatments.-
