What to wear for secretary job (in an office, for the Government, I'm female)?

Please help. I feel like I dressed too casually at my last secretarial job. I wore black, brown, or gray dress pants and a somewhat dressy shirt or sweater every day. I know the obvious answer is a suit jacket and skirt and whatnot, but it always felt odd dressing the same as my superiors... In fact, wearing a suit would be MORE formal than my superiors.... Any help? I also didn't wear any makeup and I just left my hair down, afraid of being too extravagant or too formal.

You can wear makeup. Jobs actually like it when the receptionist/secretary dolls herself up. It makes a better impression for the company to have an attractive person running the front office. Just buy cute yet basic suit pieces(jacket, skirt, pants) then spruce it up with a cute silk top and cute shoes.

So what is wrong with what you wore in the past. Wear a pair of slacks, nice shirt and maybe a cardigan. Tie a scarf around your shoulder or your neck.

what i would wear is a nice, off-white ruffled top with either a pencil skirt or a floral skirt with heels or flats. though i would also wear some mascara and eyeliner.
