new york state vs. new york city?

I was in my American government class and this question came to my mind and i couldn't figure out the answer. Hopefully somebody else knows. What is the job of new york state government and the actual US government? It would be nice to know what is the difference between New york State and City? I know one is a state and the other a city but like what tasks the each required to do and their purpose. --thanks!

New york city is a unique political structure, it that five counties are under the direct control of the city government. Each level of government is responsible for the level for which it governs so the city government manages and is responsible for the city, then there is the county government, next is state and then country government.

Well I have never been to NY state, only NYC, but I will tell u some thing NY state is very very very very cold from September-June. Just to let u know.
