How do I move from a small country town in FLORIDA, to the "windy city" CHICAGO?

I am a single mother of a 3 year old, so SAFE child care is TOP priority. I am a nursing student, so I wont be able to move until I finish which will be a year and a half from now. I come from a small URBAN community that has been overcome by violence in the past couple of years (which is one of many reasons I want to move). Where is a SAFE, community to live?. I am big on education and arts, so moving to a place where my son is exposed to many things is very important. Where are the best schools? outside/commnuity events? good jobs? FOOD?! Is a car vital? where are the quiet communities?

Consider a suburb of Chicago; they tend to be safer in my experience.
