Advice that I have been given to get into animation work is sketch sketch sketch, but what should I sketch?

I think Universities are against anime, but do you reckon still life or cartoons? 'Sketch' is quite a broad word, anyone know what employers/ degrees look for in the style/ type of sketching?

I have been told that admissions staff at art schools look more for potential, than established talent, when looking a prospective portfolios. So my advice would be sketch everything. While it would be nice to work on just one style of animation or art, what I think they are telling you is to sketch everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Do still life, cartoon, doodles, whatever. I find that people look more for diversity in your work than looking for the "one guy that can draw trees really well".
