What professional career options are available for a former felon in California?
My son is in prison; will be out in 3 yrs. He is taking college classes and was leaning towards Nursing or Optometry (to continue his education when he is released) but heard that former felons in Calif. are not allowed to obtain those licenses to practice. We'd like to know what other career options he might have. I would appreciate pertinent information or answers to my question. Please, no snide or negative comments. Thanks.

I'm not sure if he would ever be hired for jobs like that with a criminal background. Depending on what he is in prison for he can go for business degree or something like that.

I'm not sure if he has an interest in this, but he can always look towards the auto industry, such as becoming a mechanic. They make a lot of money. (I know someone in that situation who now has a respected profession in the auto industry).

He will never be seen as an ex-felon by employers. Employers are very reluctant to hire felons and most felons are chronically unemployed their entire lives... More

Some employers will give him a chance but he would have to be upfront with them. He could get discouraged after getting a few rejections. If he has the capital, he should open his own business. There is the hair business, the restaurant business, the landscaping business, or like Liz said, the auto industry. He could... More

Some fields that would hire him include welding, carpentry, construction or construction management, masonry, auto mechanic, painter, plumber, heating & refrigeration specialist, electrician and restaurant management. If he doesn't like any of those he can go to college and start his own business. If he doesn't want... More
