Going for a job interview/application process. I need help!?

I haven't had a formal job interview since I was seventeen. I haven't had one in three years, because I've had some jobs 'handed' to me. I'm going to apply at Pier 1 Imports, and about a million other places this week, and I have a few concerns: Clothing - I don't have dressy pants. Is that something I should pick up? Or could I get away with a high waisted (but modestly cut,) grey skirt, with a nice shirt tucked into it, with black tights and shoes? Makeup - What's appropriate? Social Awkwardness - How can I give good answers to questions on the spot?
