Do the college you go to play a factor in getting a good engineering job. esp Civil engineering?

Not very much. It pretty much depends on you. In 30+ years as an engineer I've seen and worked with 4.0 GPA graduates of prestigious schools who were complete idiots - all they knew was textbook material. Yes I think it plays a factor, not a huge factor but the university's engineering school reputation is something some recruiters look at.

Maybe on your first job but from there on it`s mostly successful specialized job experience that counts. Even an extremely high salary demand or graduating from a scarcely known university will not prevent you from getting the good engineering job if your successful work history fits the requirements of the job vacancy... Yes, as companies recruiting engineers cannot go to every college and thus they select the top few which they can cover and which produces the best candidates to interview.
