A shade tree mechanic working with jackstands and a hoist would probably need 10 hours to get the engine out and 5 hours to put the new engine in. Depends on a lot of factors but a rough guide would be 4 hours to swap them

The new engine, is it a short block, long block, or a complete engine? The length of time will vary accordingly.

no decent mechanic would take that job, to spend time fitting an engine of unknown quality then finding it doesn't run is not worth it for most people plus your used engine would probably need a new oil pump, cam belt and water pump prior to fitting, which are easily done out of the car but tricky in the car, if it's... The used engine should be completely checked before you have it installed and I strongly recommend a new cam belt and water pump while the engine is on the ground. Put in new belts and hoses. The flat rate will probably be 8 hours... More
