Can my employer give out my social security number to American Express without my consent?

We are implementing a new travel procedure where it is mandatory for all employees to use a company provided credit card. Our company signed a contract with American Express, and sent off our names and socials to them for credit checks. Can they do this legally?

Yes, if you agreed to a job that included a credit card you agreed to receive said card. It is not possible to issue you a credit card without identifying you.

Absolutely. If you're worried about identity theft and such because your SSN is being passed around, don't be. SSNs are actually public records and if a person really wants to, they can get it. They will need to know a lot more information about you to put that number to any criminal use.
