What can employers find out by calling a place you got fired from for employment verification?

I got fired from a job about 3 years ago, but since I worked there for over 3 years I still like to use it on a resume. What I want to know is legally, what can future employers find out from my old job? Should I not be putting this job on my resume? Basically its the only job on my resume that was an "important" and professional job and I don't want people to know that I got fired and especially the reason I got fired.
