How many interviews are there in an interview process?

I've never had a job before, so I know little about how the job search process works. I used to think that there would only be one interview, but I'm hearing about second and third interviews? How many are there and why are there so many?

In a small, small company, usually one interview is sufficient. In a medium size and large company/corporation, usually 2 interviews, sometimes, three. SOme companies have just one and some have multiples, usually with different managers. There is no set number.

Most of the time, there is only 1 but there may be 2 probably because they are really interested to hire you but misplaced one of your documents that requires you to get hired (like a resume or an application) and want you to come in for a second interview. I've never heard of anybody having a third though.
