Is it possible to start a career as an artist/animator without an art degree?

Would it be accepted for a college graduate to apply for a job like this with a degree in something like history, provided they had a portfolio assembled on their own of sketches/works? Or would it be better to have a double-degree or minor in art, even if the school had a poor art program?
