Why do liberals feel bigger government is better government?

At a time when many claim to see no difference between the two political parties, President Obama and his Democratic allies are making one distinction paramount: their operating assumption that bigger government is better government. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703558004574582312065087466.html

I know, it's dumb. But it's not like the government significantly decreases in size during each Republican administration, either. Let's be honest here; both major parties want to control our lives somehow. Think about that statement long and hard. Vote independent.

I think both parties are guilty of expanding government. On your end, it takes a lot of government to wage two concurrent wars.

I don't think "bigger" government is better. Hiring people and throwing money at problems are not the answer. The answer is to have a productive society, and if we give people opportunities it will be easier to accomplish that. Things like unemployment insurance is a universally acceptable form of government. This... More

I personally don't believe that any liberal feels big government is better. Big government can go either way, right or left. I do believe that government should provide some basic things like health care and education, just as the right believes that we should have a strong and big military.

Why do cons think smaller is better? Putting government in terms of big and small is a narrow way of looking at it. In reality, government policies have to be effective, and not just big or small, if we want a good society. I am always perplexed by how conservatives and even some liberals are willing to put government... More

They've been indoctrinated to believe that socialism the way to live, and that it needs to be organized and run by a government. A bigger government is not a better government but a government should address the interests of the people. In a modern, complex society a small government would have great difficulty doing that if it could do it at all. Even those who advocate smaller government grow government when they are in power.
