How do you know if a government job is legitimate?

This supposely government job is asking for $69.00 for an application and some kind of package so that I may apply for a government job. Do you have to pay an application fee for some government jobs? How can I tell if this is legit and it's not a scam?

No government job will ask you for upfront money...or any money. You are probably dealing with some sort of placement agency...and a shady one at that. Federal government jobs can be found at the link below. No cost to apply and you can fill out the application on-line and fax the supporting documentation... More

That's some private company, not the government, and they're claiming they'll help get you a job - don't count on it. No there isn't a fee to apply for a government job.

Anyone asking for a fee up front is running a scam.

It's a load of BS - A total scam and could result in identity theft. If you are in the USA, then all federal government jobs are listed on Local and state government all have their own systems

A scam - big time. Along with most answers, I'll add that the only time you'd pay, would be for an exam; i.e. $15. for a county and/or state NJ governmental job. Otherwise there's no fee for Federal Gov't. jobs.
