Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Jobs?

My son is getting ready to join the Air Force. He wants to be an Aircraft Mechanic. What would be a good job to put in for to where he will get a hands on job working on Jet engines? I want to make sure he doesn't sign up for a job changing tires on a plane. He wants to actually work on the Jet Engines and maybe structural parts of the plane.

If he wants to work on jet engines, there is only one AFSC he can have. 2A6X1 - AEROSPACE PROPULSION He cannot do both, he can be a jet engine mechanic or he can work on other systems of aircraft.

He can do one of two things... 1)Aerospace Propulsion--actually working on the jet engines, or 2) Metals Technology--working on the skeleton of the aircraft (welding and machining).
