What jobs can you get majoring in history?

I like the subject. I was just wondering what type of job I could do if I got a major in history? Can you also include how much they generally pay? Thanks.

I hate to tell you this, but there really are virtually NO jobs specifically available to folks with a BA/BS in History. There are only 2 real specific routes for a holder with a BA/BS in History:

1) Archivist/historic researcher - Most folks getting a straight-up Bachelors in History basically plan to be a researcher or work in some govt. archives, or maybe work in a museum. All of these typically require a Masters Degree or higher...and there's more bad news. They pay is shitty! You might make $25K to $40K working for the govt. in some capacity at the Smithsonian, and you'll have to continue slowly crawl your way up the food chain and basically "do your time" to get more pay/higher title. In this field you're more likely to get personal satisfaction in your work... in lue of pay.

2) Educator - You can, like mentioned below, become a teacher, but you'll need to be certified to teach history. So you may need a Minor in Secondary Education to do that. And more bad news here, pay is actually okay depending on the school district ($30K is typical starting pay, but it goes up fast). However, there are DOZENS of social studies-related majors who are ALL fighting for the same job you want there. So I would recommend getting certified in P.E. or some other field so you can have a better shot at getting a job. Likewise, you could be an educator at a 2 or 4 year college. But again, that requires a Masters degree or higher. Pay is only marginally better.

Trust me on this...you don't want a plain-old History degree. Make sure you get a minor in Business or something more marketable.

It's true you may land a meager desk-job in a white-collar business, but you can have ANY kind of degree for that type of job.

The only job I know of that you can have if you major in history is a History teacher. I may be wrong, though. You should consult your professor. Anyway, assuming I'm right: This means you would have to teach elementary or high school, which barely pays anything. It sucks. However, if you earn your p.h.d. in history, you could work at college, which pays much, much better. It would be REALLY cool if you could publish books if you become a history major, because that will add security to your job and you would make even more money. All of this is a lot of work. If you're really in love with history, go for it. If history is a subject that doesn't make you want to jump with joy, you might want to consider another major. The most important thing is to be happy with what you're doing. :)

I suggest that you take an aptitude test. An aptitude test assesses your skills and your interests and matches you to the careers that are right for you. A high school or college adviser can recommend a good one. Failing that, go to the workforce development agency (unemployment) and request one. JobFit is excellent.
