How to I get a video from a DVD to my computer so that I can edit it?

I have a home video that is on a DVD but the video editing program isn't letting me open it up to view and edit it. It opens up on my computer in Windows media so that I can watch it, but I can't get it anywhere else. Do I need to change the format, and if so, how do I do that?
