Requesting a week off at soon to be new job?

I'm going to be starting a new job at Brookdale Senior Living (I'm going to start doing my paper work & drug test/physical this friday) However, this upcoming May 2010 I'm supposed to be going on a cruise from May 23-30th...I'm afraid they wont let me off work for that week to go on the cruise ...the cruise is a present from my parents before I start the nursing program since i'll be studying hard and such and a time to really relax and have fun before i get hit hard with the stress... Will they be understanding about it? Its 5 months away... and everything is already booked any advice? has anyone ever had this situation with a nursing home? i'll take any advice... its a dietary aide position if that helps....

I would suggest telling them very soon after being hired. And just explain it the same way, that it's already booked and paid for. If they know in advance they will probably be more understanding.

It would have been best if you notified them, at the time you received or accepted the offer. Since that didn't happen, I suggest you tell them on Friday when you are doing the new hire paperwork. Being 5 months away, I doubt it will be a problem. You most likely will have to take all, or a portion of time, unpaid.
