In school I was taught to put "open," however, when I went to fill out my first application, they wouldn't take it unless I put an amount. Is there anyway you can find out what the job pays? Can you call HR anonymously and ask?

It depends on your job title, experience, and location. Register for www.glassdoor.com and you can browse salaries for most large companies in the US. Do your homework on a particular job/company so you don't ask for too little or too much. Good luck!

I always ask for minimum, it will get their attention and they will want to hire you (that generally being the point). You can usually get raises fast. Good luck.
