Am I guilty of theft? and do I deserve to be sacked.?
I Have been charged with theft at work for opening a sealed item ( magazine) in the department store in which I work as a cleaner. I have worked as a janitor in one of the largest supermarket chains in the Uk. I am not employed directly by the supermarket but by a cleaning company contracted to clean their shops. was at work 3 weeks ago and was passing by the newstand cleaning when an article in a sealed magazine caught my eye. I got carried away and opened the wrapper and looked throught the mag for 3 minutes at the newstand and then put the magazine back in the wrapper and on the shelf and carried on working . 3 days later I got a call from my line manager to answer serious allegations against me from The store management and security regrding the mag. When I admitted opening the mag which they had cctv footage of I was suspended. I had a disciplinary 5 days later and was charged with theft although I never moved with the magazine or took it out of shop. I was told I would be informed in a letter in 5 working days of a decision. That is 3 weeks ago I called to alert them of this and they claim they posted a lettter but are going to post another one since they claim a decision has been reached. From all indications and from a reliable sources I have been sacked. I have worked here for 3 years and never been in trouble . Also I have found out from a source that the store management in that branch dont want me back in their store and want to make sure I dont work in any other branch in the Uk. How am I going to find a Job after been dismissed for theft? How will I cope I am truly sorry and wiiling to pay for the item but nobody is intrested please help I need advice am soo confused and dejected . Its soo hard to find a job nowadays have soo many direct debits and bills dont know how im gonna cope if was not christian an a bit stronger w oulkd end it all as It dont look like i have anything too live for.

The second you opened a sealed magazine with intent to read the article, you committed theft. That being said, the crime was very minor and the punishment is excessive. As for the store management not wanting you back in their store, that is their right, as it is to ban you from all their other stores. You were... More

Yeah, that's theft. You wouldn't like it if somebody just looked at your things without permission, would you? Just tell them what happened, and that you learned your lesson. You may not get hired, but at least you're being honest.

It's the unsealing thing. What did you do that for? C'mon, you know you're on camera, can't you wait till after work or buy it? You broke it, you buy it. I wouldn't fire you or suspend over this, I'd just make you pay for it, but I'm easy going.
