Is it ever possible for my girlfriend and I to stop arguing?
I have been with my girlfriend for over two years now, and sadly things just don't seem to be getting better. At first everything was absolutely perfect between us, and we had an incredible relationship for maybe the first year of our relationship. Then things just started to go downhill. We just began to argue over the most ridiculous things, and in truth we're both pretty headstrong, stubborn... let's face it, arrogant people, which always seems to make things worse. At the height of this, we even became violent towards each other. Fortunately that is well behind us now, but these ridiculous arguments remain. I know you're probably thinking that it's just time to move on and find someone else, but the thing is, we have so much in common that when we're not arguing, we're perfect together. We're never short of conversation when we're together, even if it does sometimes end up awfully hostile, and she's the only person I've ever trusted fully, or been able to be completely open with. It's not something I can just throw away. Our feelings on the matter are pretty much mutual; we both love each other and want to make our relationship work, but it just feels as though it's never going to. It's almost as though we're too alike in some ways, although I must confess that I feel she often refuses to recognise that she often plays the bigger role in starting these arguments. Deep down, we've both feared for a long time that only the end of our relationship will solve things, but it really is too difficult for us both to handle. We've been together so long, and have all sorts of inside jokes and weird quirks that only we share. Despite the hostility between us sometimes, just yesterday she said that she doesn't think she can handle our breakup at all... I don't think I can either, though in truth part of that is because I know I'd be worried sick about her if we ever parted ways. I know I've been rambling on for quite a while now, and I'm sure it's impossible to completely explain the situation, but hopefully I'll be able to give you some insight into our relationship and problems. All advice is appreciated. Thank you.

I know what you mean and am in a similar situation myself unfortunately. I've been married just over a year now and hubby and i seem to go through periods where we are constantly arguing about everything, then we'll have a break for around a week or so when things are fine again. Splitting up is not an option as we... More

Get couples counseling - you need a mediator. You also need to learn how to argue nicely - its important that you both get your point across and can talk about things. Maybe a counselor will teach you do argue properly! It sounds like its worth it.

There will never be a relatlionship where you never have a argument or disagrement. Think how dull this world would be if every one agreed on every thing. The main thing to remember is, sit down and talk it out. Communications is the most important part of a relationship. If you can sit down and talk it out and find a... More
