Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the environment?

Hi guys and girls, I'm currently a year 2 mechanical engineering student. I realize that my future job requires me to work mainly on mechanical systems and engines. Personally, I have passion in contributing to the environment, as I am really concerned with our current earth condition now.. it's deteriorating day by day, and let's face it.. Engines and mechanical systems / power plants designed by Mechanical Engineers actually contribute to that. But without these systems and engines, our lives will be difficult. So my question is : as a mechanical engineer, is it possible for me to contribute to the environment? I am not sure about my ideas, but what I am thinking is actually to help design engines that are environmental friendly (emits less carbon). Is it possible? Is there anything else for mechanical engineers to do in order to play a part in saving the environment? (not only by helping to plant trees, of course..) Any idea which companies are actually doing this kind of environment protecting job? I just feel the urge to help saving the environment now before it's too late. Thanks alot. Have a nice day ahead!
