Participation In Democracy Period 3, 2/4/10. Constitutional influences Democracy is a political government either carried out directly by the people (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (Representative democracy). Democracy derives authority by allowing the citizens of the country vote on representatives on who they think will be best for the job, and for the country. Our founding fathers chose this government type so that each branch of government can check and balance the political power of the others to prevent any branch from becoming to powerful and possible threaten the liberty of the people. Baron de Montesquieu was an enlightenment thinker from France who also wrote a book called, The Spirit of the Laws in 1748. In Montesquieu's book he shared his belief that government should divide itself according to its role or "powers", therefore creating a Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branch. Montesquieu explained that under this system each branch could Check and Balance the others, which could help protect the peoples interest and liberty. He influenced this system on people who bought and read his book. The historical documents, just like the constitution, were made to form a union and establish rules and laws. The Declaration of Independence, ratified July 4, 1776. Was written to establish inalienable rights and for independence for the settlement from the British. Likewise the English bill of rights, signed December 16, 1689. Was written to assert the rights of the commoners and made the king also subject to the laws as the people were. Many of the historical documents influenced the constitution by setting a base system in which every man, women, and child are to abide by.
