What were some common/popular surnames during the 1960's?

I'm writing a story that takes place in the 1960's during the Vietnam War but I am having some trouble coming up with names for characters (male names, not female). I found a list online of first names that were popular during the 1960's but I have no idea what to do about last names. Help? I can't write a story with characters that have no names.

The surnames today are the same ones from the 60s. You could either randomly flick through the local phone book, pick from any of the numerous common ones (jobs: Cook, Smith, Fletcher, Baker etc. Colours: White, Black, Green. The "sons": Johnson, Allison, Mathison. Or pick a famous one: Pitt, Ford, Bush, Gates etc... More

last name pass on from generation to generation so anyone you know now would still work. but i nominate fischer that's my last name and i'd like to be in a story :)
