Does society look down on male elementary school teachers and view them as pedophiles?

When I was in elementary school, every single teacher I had was female. I wasn't sure of the reason for that back then, but now I understand. Is it because nobody wants to hire a man to be an elementary school teacher, because it seems like the perfect job for a pedophile? Plus it would be awkward for a teacher to try to hide a boner or explain it if the kids saw that he had one in class. Do they have more rigid background checks for men?
